I actually ordered this little guide along with the RNotes clinical pocket guide at the same time and they have the same information pretty much but I prefer the way the RNotes is presented better than the way information is presented in this guide.

RNnotes has all the critical care info this guide has plus more. For example – labs in this are given but the units are not given. Cranial nerves are listed but in the RNotes cranial nerves are listed with how to assess the nerve. Also quite a bit of info in this is given in grey print on a grey background which is hard to read. After about 2 minutes of comparing the two books I knew I only needed the one so I returned this one. If I hadn’t ordered the two guides together I wouldn’t have compared the two and would probably have been happy, so take that into consideration when you read this.

I had 2 criteria when looking for an EM pocket guide: 1] it should have be easily readable/well organized for quick access and 2] It should have good content (viz. most common presenting symptoms, DDx, workups, treatment algorithms, etc.). This little book performed the 1st criterion exceedingly well but it fell laughably short on the second. The amount of useful clinical info is so little that it makes it almost useless.

I will say that it has a pretty decent medicine reference section.

I opted for this guide over Pocket EM because of the price and b/c my colleague told me he wasn’t happy with "Pocket Emergency". It was a mistake.

I refer to this guide almost daily while working in an Emergency Department. I have owned previous editions of this guide. This edition improves on previous editions, but there are a few shortfalls. Namely, this edition seems to be less durable. I owned the previous edition, Emergency & Critical Care Pocket Guide, ACLS Version, for what seemed to be ages (at least much longer than I have owned and used this edition), and this one is already falling apart. The back page tore off, and the front page is nearly off as well. The spiral binding cracked, so there is about 1/2 inch that is not bound anymore. Recently I have found that I refer to applications like Epocrates (Kindle Tablet Edition) and PEPID much more often than I have this guide. That said, I can still get a quick look at drugs with this guide much faster than on the phone. So, this book (and future editions) will continue to have a place in my arsenal.
